John H. McCormick Educational Outreach

Elliot 2016

Daniel S. Elliott has been selected by the Central Pennsylvania Engineers Week Council to receive the 2016 John H. McCormick Educational Outreach Award.  This award recognizes his significant contributions to local STEM education spanning over the past three decades.  Dan is a retired engineer with almost 50 years of technical experience and has lived in York Haven, PA since 1971.  He graduated from Drexel Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Science degree in Commerce and Engineering, and obtained an MBA from York College of Pennsylvania.
Dan began his career with Amp Inc. as a Drexel co-op student, working as a technician in their research labs.  He worked for Leeds & Northrup Co., Amp Inc., and Berg Electronics for a number of years before starting his own firm, Distributed Systems Equipment, where he designed, sold, and installed industrial control systems in Central Pennsylvania.

Dan has been an active member of both ISA, the International Society for Automation and ASM International, “The Materials Information Society” for many years.  He served as president of the local ISA section for two years and was the Education Chairman for over a decade, where he ran a number of instrumentation and control training courses.  He also served for two terms as Chairman of the South Central PA Chapter of ASM International and helped start an annual summer Materials Camp for teachers at Millersville University.  This program’s mission is to instruct local teachers on classroom methods that encourage STEM education with hands-on demonstrations and experiments. Two camps have been held so far in the Central Pennsylvania area, reaching a total of over 35 area teachers and an estimated 500 students.

Mr. Elliott, along with the local ASM chapter is also very active with local science fairs, publicly recognizing a total of nine special award winners annually - three different projects at each of the Capital Area, Lancaster, and York fairs.  Winners and their families are further recognized at the section’s annual Student Night, where they are encouraged to present their projects and tour an area college.  In addition, Dan has helped judge the FIRST Technical Challenge regional robotics competition and has helped to create and fund an annual Outstanding Student Award for the top student in the Department of Applied Engineering and Technology at Millersville University.
Dan was nominated for this award by fellow members of the local ASM International section, who said “Dan Elliott has had a profoundly positive impact on STEM education in our community.  More than anyone, Dan has been the glue that kept the chapter together.  Without his dedication to education and his drive, the chapter’s impact to STEM education would be substantially lower.”
