Dr. Aldo Morales 2008 Technical Achievement

Mr. AB Shafaye has been selected by the Central Pennsylvania Engineers Week Council to receive the 2008 Technical Achievement Award.

Mr. Shafaye and his wife Lori reside in Middletown, PA. He has been a faculty member at Penn State Harrisburg (PSH) since August 1986 and is currently the Vice Chair of the Electrical Engineering and Electrical Engineering Technology programs; serving as a Senior Instructor in Engineering. Prior to joining PSH, he taught at Southern Illinois and Gannon Universities. In addition, he was a data communication engineer in California before moving to Pennsylvania.

Mr. Shafaye earned his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Souther Illinois University in 1979 and 1982, respectively. Early in his career, Mr. Shafaye focused on alternative energy sources with emphasis on wind power and data communications. At PSH, he taught Switching Circuit Design, Electrical Design Project, Basic Systems Design, Electric Transients, Alternating Current Circuits, Applied Electricity, Electrical Instrumentation, Fundamentals of Electricity, Industrial Electricity and Electronics, Electronic Design I, Project Proposal Preparation, Introduction to Computer Hardware/Software, Design of Automatic Control Systems, Microprocessors, and Data Communications/Networking. He has most recently been involved with “Active Learning by Utilizing Tablet PCs in an Electrical Engineering Curriculum” initiative funded by a grant from HP. In addition, through a considerable equipment, software, and maintenance grant from Altera Corporation for Programmable Logic Devices, he has developed laboratories and course materials for a number of digital logic design and related courses over the last 15 years. Additionally, he has served on numerous university and college committees and is currently the Chair of the Penn State Harrisburg Student Affairs Committee. He also serves on the Engineering Technology Advisory Board of Penn State's School of Engineering Design, Technology, and Professional Programs.

A strong advocate of volunteerism and professional activities, Mr. Shafaye is a member of the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society and a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) serving the institute's mission in various capacities. He is currently the IEEE Region 2 Central Area Chair. In the past, he has also served as IEEE Region 2 Sections Congress Coordinator, PA Area Chair, Secretary, and Student Activities Chair. In addition, he is currently the Advisor for the Penn State Harrisburg IEEE Student Branch (since 1988) and the Publisher for the IEEE Susquehanna Section. Furthermore, he has served the IEEE Susquehanna Section as Chair, Vice Chair/Program Chair, Secretary/Treasurer, and Newsletter Editor during the last 15 years. The IEEE, a non-profit organization, is the world's leading professional association for the advancement of technology with more than 370,000 members, including more than 80,000 students, in more than 160 countries.
