2008 John H. McCormick Educational Outreach Award

2008 Educational Outreach

Susan M. Benjamin has been selected by the Central Pennsylvania Engineer's Week Council to receive the 2008 John H. McCormick Educational Outreach Award. The award recognizes her dedication and considerable achievements in introducing school students to the world of science and engineering, through the participation and organization in school programs.

One of Sue's biggest accomplishments is the Engineer's Week program at the Whitaker Center. During a three-day period, students get an opportunity for hands-on learning. Activities include making “GAK” or building and testing bridges. Sue has spearheaded this effort for the last four years. Last year the program attracted 55 engineering volunteers, coming from six different engineering disciplines. John McCormick, Co-Chair of Education Outreach Committee of the Engineer's Week Council, has said that “Without Sue's dedication and tireless work efforts, the Whitaker Center outreach program would not be the success that it is today.”

In addition to the yearly Whitaker Center program, Sue has made many school visits to discuss the engineering profession to students. Additionally, she has participated in AIChE and Middletown High School Shadow programs. She has also mentored more than 15 Chemical Engineering Co-op students over the years at the Hershey Company. She has always been available to assist school volunteers in the preparation of visit materials and presentations. She has an excellent rapport with middle school students, using demonstrations and exhibits to explain engineering concepts.

Sue is a Process Engineer at the Hershey Company. Working in the Product Commercialization Department, she has worked on the development of many new Hershey products including Hugs, Caramel Kisses, Peanut Butter Kisses, and Kissables. Sue received a Bachelors of Science degree from Michigan Technological University and a Masters of Business Administration from the University of New Haven.

Sue has been a member of the Susquehanna Section of American Institute of Chemical Engineers. She has been a member of the Section's Board of Directors for the last five years and has served as Newsletter Editor for several years.

Sue is married to Joseph Benjamin and has a son and a daughter in high school. Sue recently helped her son on an Eagle Scout project that included the design and construction of a walkway from the school gym to a playground with benches and a picnic table at Saint Joan of Arc School in Hershey, PA. Sister Eileen Marie of Saint Joan of Arc School recently wrote that “She has taken of her time to speak to our students about careers in engineering and has helped with our annual science fairs. Her contributions to the school throughout the past nine years are numerous ... we extend our sincere congratulations to Sue.”
